Eclipses in Islam

ALLAH [SWT] SAYS IN THE HOLY QUR’AN :

“IT IS ALLAH WHO HAS MADE THE SUN A RADIANT LIGHT, AND THE MOON TO BE SHINING LIGHT, AND DETERMINED PHASES FOR IT, THAT YOU MIGHT KNOW HOW TO COMPUTE THE YEARS AND MEASURE TIME. NONE OF THIS DID ALLAH CREATE BUT IN TRUTH. THUS DOES ALLAH EXPLAIN HIS SIGNS IN DETAIL FOR THOSE WHO HAVE KNOWLEDGE?” (Surah Yunus : 10 / 5)

The purpose of this Revelation is for mankind to use the sun and moon to compute date, and time by its movements, and to appreciate them as marvels and wonders of ALLAH [SWT]. They indicate the infinite POWER of ALLAH [SWT], and the SUPREME WISDOM of ALLAH [SWT]. Therefore, men should worship only ALLAH, and nothing besides. Thus, in the very following verse, ALLAH [SWT] SAYS:

“VERILY, IN THE ALTERNATION OF THE NIGHT AND THE DAY, AND IN ALL THAT ALLAH HAS CREATED IN THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH, ARE SIGNS FOR THOSE WHO FEAR [ALLAH].” (10 / 6)

“IT IS HE [ALLAH] WHO CREATED THE NIGHT AND THE DAY, AND THE SUN AND THE MOON; ALL THESE [CELESTIAL BODIES] FLOAT IN THEIR ORBIT IN SPACE.” (Surah Al-Anbia : 21 / 33)

The sun and moon, night and day, and all celestial bodies in the cosmos follow an orderly pattern and are subject to a systematic whole in which there is no chaos or disorder. This cosmic order points to a unity, a unity found in all creation, which is in the Tauheed of ALLAH [SWT]. Therefore, all signs show a universal unity with its source in ONE ALLAH, and that ONE ALLAH alone should be worshipped by mankind.

“WOULD YOU THEN TURN AWAY FROM ANY OF THESE SIGNS?” (21 / 32)

“BLESSED IS ALLAH WHO MADE CONSTELLATIONS IN THE SKIES, AND PLACED THEREIN A LAMP [SUN], AND A MOON GIVING LIGHT.” (Surah Al-Furqan : 25 / 61)

The groupings of fixed stars in the heavens form beautiful mansions and constellations which are overshadowed by the sun and moon. These have been created to convenience man, and to grant him guidance to worship the MAKER and CREATOR of all things.

“[THESE CELESTAIL BODIES EXISTENCE TEACHES] MEN TO SEEK TO REMEMBER [ALLAH] AND TO SHOW THEIR GRATITUDE [TO ALLAH].” (25 / 62)

“IT IS NOT PERMITTED TO THE SUN TO OVERTAKE THE MOON, NOR CAN THE NIGHT OUTSTRIP THE DAY. EACH ONE JUST FLOATS ALONG THROUGH SPACE IN ITS OWN ORBIT.” (Surah Ya Sin : 36 / 40)

There is complete order and system in the cosmos, and there is no flaw therein.

 “IN IT IS A SIGN FOR THEM.” (36 / 41)

Everything in the visible skies, in cosmic space which consists of planets, stars, nebulae, and galaxies are in unceasing motion determined by centrifugal forces and mutual gravitational attraction, in conformity with ALLAH'S plan and wisdom.

“DO YOU NOT SEE HOW ALLAH HAS CREATED THE SEVEN HEAVENS ONE ABOVE THE OTHER [IN FULL HARMONY]? AND MADE THE MOON A LIGHT IN THEIR MIDST, AND MADE THE SUN A GLORIOUS LAMP!” (Surah Nuh : 71 / 15,16)

Everything is created with a purpose by ALLAH [SWT]. Nothing originated by itself or accidentally. And the whole of creation points to the absolute POWER and SUPREME CONTROL of ALLAH [SWT] over all. And all things in creation stand for the TRUTH.

“AND ALLAH BROUGHT YOU FORTH FROM THE EARTH, AND WILL RETURN YOU INTO IT [EARTH], AND RAISE YOU AGAIN [FROM IT].” (71 / 17,18)

That will be the final result of life. Therefore, let all these natural phenomena teach mankind to worship and submit to ONE ALLAH, and never ever turn to any other but ONE ALLAH. All things in the Universe teaches and guides man to this lesson of failure or success, to temporal life or eternal future, and to Hell or Paradise .
