As the Glorious Qur'an says:
'Do the people think that they will be left alone on saying,
'We believe,' and they will not be tested?' (29:2)
The Glorious Qur'an and Hadeeth also preach
that the suffering of the faithful in this world expiates
their sins so they avoid punishment after death and gain
greater rewards in the Hereafter.
Aboo Hurayrah (RA) reported that the
Messenger of Allah (SAW)said: 'Whosever's good Allah
(SWT) intends, he meets with afflictions to get it.
(Bukhari)
Anas (RA) reported that the Messenger of
Allah (SAW)said: 'When Allah (SWT) wishes good for His
servant, He hastens punishment for him in this world and
when Allah (SWT)wishes evil for His servant, he lets him
off in this world for his sin until the Day of
Judgement.' (Tirmizi).
Anas (RA) reported that the Messenger of
Allah (SAW) said: 'The greatest reward is surely with the
greatest trial and verily the Almighty and Glorious Allah
when He loves a people, He puts them through trials'
(Tirmizi, Ibne Majah)
Patience to endure adversity with a serene
mind is the sign of every true Muslim. The Glorious
Qur'an declares:
'And seek assistance through patience and Salah (Prayer) and
indeed that is hard except on those practising humility.'
(2:45)
Anas (RA) reported that the Prophet (SAW)
passed by a woman who was weeping near a grave and he
said: 'Fear Allah and be patient.' She said: 'Surely you
have not been afflicted with a calamity like mine.' And
she did not recognise him. Then she was informed that he
was the Prophet (SAW). So she went to the house of the
Prophet(SAW)and there she did not find any guard. Then
she said to him, 'I did not recognize you.' He said:
'Verily patience is at the first attack of mishap.'
(Bukhari)
Ibne Mas'ood (RA) reported that the
Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 'Patience is half of
faith.' (Aboo Nu'aym)
Muslims are taught to perform their duties
to Allah (SWT) and to their fellow-beings, assuredthat
Allah (SWT) is with them, and to persist until they
attain their goal, believing that the true Muslim
performs good deeds for the sake of Allah (SWT) alone, as
actions intended to achieve worldly fame have no
religious merit. Therefore if others fail to appreciate
his works, he suffers no disappointment.
'So when He gave them (wealth) by His grace
they became niggardly and turned back and withdrew.'
(91:76)
One who places his total reliance upon
Allah (SWT) and performs his duties to obey the Glorious
Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet at never suffers any
sense of failure even if his efforts are not successful
during his lifetime:
'No, but whoso submitted his countenance
(i.e. himself) to Allah (SWT) and he is righteous, so for
him is his reward with his Rabb (Creator and Sustainer).'
(21:112)
'Surely those who believed and did good
deeds, for them there are the Gardens of Paradise for
entertainment.' (18:107)
'And that for man is nothing but what he strives for.'
(53:39)
The authentic Hadeeth also report that the
Prophet (SAW) warned his followers not to envy any man
for his worldly success and prosperity because it is not
possible to know his fate after death.
Umar Ibnul Khattab (RA) reported: 'I went
to the Prophet (SAW) while he was lying on a mat of date
leaves. There was no bedding between it and him and the
mat had left marks on his side. His head was resting on a
leather pillow stuffed with palm fibres.
