HADHRAT UMME HAKAM BINT ABI SUFYAAN (RA) -
She was the half-sister of Hadhrat Umme Habibah the wife of
the Holy Prophet (SAW). Hadhrat Mu'aawiyah (RA) was her real
brother. Their mother was Hind bint Utbah. She was one of those
that accepted Islam on the day Makkah was conquered. She took
the oath of allegiance from the Holy Prophet (SAW). She has
narrated from her brother and her son Abdur Rahman Ibn Abdullah
Ibn Thaqafi has narrated from her.
Imaam Zuhari (RA) narrates, 'I entered upon Hadhrat Urwah
Ibn Zubair (R.A) as he was writing to Waleed Ibn Abdul Malik's
companion Hunaida has he had questioned him regarding the
following verse of the Holy Qur'an: "O you who believe! When
believing women come to you asemigrants, exaniine them." -
(AI-Mumtahanah:IO)
He wrote 'the Holy Prophet (SAW) had formed a peace treaty
with the Quraysh on the day of Hudaybiyah, that he would return
to them who came without his guardian's permission; thus the
men would be returned. But when the women migrated, Allah
forbade that he return them when they had been tested, with the
test of lslam. Thus she said that she came with desire in
accepting lslam. And Allah ordered him that he return their
dower towards them, and Allah has further said, 'and you ask
for what you have spent i.e. on dowry.'
The next morning her two brothers came in her pursuit. The Holy
Prophet (SAW) refused to return her to them. They returned to
Makkah and informed the Quraysh. But they did not send anybody
in her pursuit. Instead they were content that the women were
captured. "And ask for (the return of) that which you have
spent (as Mahr) and let them (the disbelievers, etc.) ask back
for that which they have spent. That is the Judgement of Allah.
He judges between you. And Allah is All-Knowing, All- Wise."
(AI-Mumtahanah:10)
It was ordained that if one of them has lost his wife to the
kuffaar then if a woman comes from them, and you obtained some
booty then give them from it the dower for that woman that has
come to you. Thus the believers remained steadfast upon Allah's
judgement and the mushrikeen refused to do so."Then pay to
those whose wives have gone, the equivalent of what they had
spent (on their Mahr)." - (Al- Mumtahanah: 1 1 )
But we do not know of any believing woman that left her
husband to go to the disbelievers after accepting Islam. And
this order was revealed just in case it would happen. "Likewise
hold not the disbelieving women as wives." (A I- Mumtahanah: 1

Upon revelation of the above, Hadhrat Umar Ibn Khattaab
(R.A) divorced Mulaykah Bint Abi Umayyah and Mu'aawiyah Ibn
AbiSufyaan married her. Hadhrat Umar (R.A) divorced Bint Jarwal
whom Abu Jahm married, lyaadh Ibn Ganam divorced Umme Hakam
bint Abi Sufyaan whom Abdullah Ibn Uthmaan Thaqafi married and
from him she bore Hadhrat Abdur Rahman (R.A).
