THE SPIDER

One of the most fascinating creepy crawlies in the world (and probably most feared!), the spider is a gifted creature. One of the chapters of the Qur'an (Soorah Ankaboot) is even named after it. By ordering it to make a web over the mouth of the cave, Allah made it a means of protecting Rasoolullah (SAW) and Aboo Bakr (RA) from the non Muslims of Makkah, because they thought that had anybody been in the cave, then the web would not have been there, and so they left them alone.
There are so many different species of spider, each with amazing capabilities:
The trapdoor spider can jump out, catch its prey and disappear back into its home faster than it takes you to blink! (An estimated one sixth of a second!)
The jumping spider can leap over a distance 36 times its own length. This is equivalent to a man jumping from one end of a football field to the other!!!
The golden orb spider produces a web that is stronger than a steel wire of the same thickness and is two metres wide!! It has also been discovered that the threads reflect ultraviolet light, therefore actually attracting insects rather than just staying invisible.
One species of spider lives underwater, surviving by carrying air bubbles between its legs when it submerges, and feeds on fish.
The Goliath spiders of rainforests and jungles eat birds the size of pigeons, and are as big as this page you are reading now!!
