“AND [QA'A-RUN WENT FORTH TO HIS PEOPLE IN
HIS POMP. AND THOSE WHO LOVED THIS PRESENT LIFE SAID: O
THAT WE HAD THE LIKE WEALTH, AS HAS BEEN GIVEN TO
QA'A-RUN! VERILY, HE IS MASTER OF A GREAT FORTUNE.”

“BUT THOSE UPON WHOM KNOWLEDGE HAD BEEN
BESTOWED SAID: ALAS FOR YOU! THE REWARD OF ALLAH [IN THE
NEXT LIFE] IS BETTER FOR HIM WHO SHALL BELIEVE AND DO
GOOD WORKS, BUT NONE SHALL ATTAIN THE\SAME EXCEPT THOSE
WHO PERSEVERE WITH PATIENCE.” (28 / 80)
“THEN WE CAUSED THE EARTH TO SWALLOW HIM UP
AND HIS PALACE, AND HE HAD NO FORCES TO DEFEND HIM BESIDE
ALLAH, NOR RESCUERS TO HELP [PROTECT HIM].”

“AND THE NEXT MORNING, THOSE WHO HAD
COVETED HIS CONDITION THE DAY BEFORE SAID: AH! VERILY,
ALLAH BESTOWS\ABUNDANT PROVISION ON SUCH OF HIS SERVANTS
AS HE PLEASES, AND [ALLAH] IS SPARING [FOR WHOM HE
PLEASES]. UNLESS ALLAH HAD BEEN GRACIOUS TO US, THE EARTH
WOULD HAVE SWALLOWED US UP ALSO. AH! THE UNBELIEVERS
SHALL NOT PROSPER. AS TO THE HOME OF THE HEREAFTER [
PARADISE ], WE WILL GIVE IT UNTO THEM WHO SEEK NOT TO
EXALT THEMSELVES IN THE EARTH, OR TO DO WRONG. AND THE
END IS FOR THE RIGHTEOUS.” (28/82,83)
From these verses of the QUR'AN we learn of
the earthquake which occurred during the time of Nabi
Moosa [AS]. The burial of Qa'a-run and his palace,
together with his tremendous wealth, in an earthquake
that struck Egypt , presents to us the earliest detailed
sketch of what such a calamity is all about. We learn
that it is “an act of GOD” that it is caused by the
Command of ALLAH [SWT], that it causes a rupture in the
earth, draws people in its proximity into the ground,
with great loss of lives and property. Whether a
geological fault exists there or not, when ALLAH [SWT]
gives a Command to the earth, it immediately and
willingly complies. This may not sound very accurate,
scientific or logical, but when has ALLAH [SWT] been
subject to laws and rules of HIS OWN making. The fire was
cooled for Nabi Ibrahim [AS]; the stick was changed into
a serpent for Nabi Moosa [AS]; the sea-way was parted for
Nab Moose [AS]; the moon was split for RASUL'ULLAH [SAW];
the QUR'AN was protected from perversion by people for
the Ummah of RASUL'ULLAH [SAW]; and so on. Similarly, in
this true story, the earth was opened up for Qa'a-run and
all his wealth, treasures and palaces to be swallowed up
and buried in the ground. This is all in the Power and
Plan of ALLAH [SWT], and nothing is impossible for ALLAH
[SWT].
There is another significant story of a
major earthquake in the QUR'AN also. This earthquake
occurred in the time of Nabi Shu'ayb [AS], who was sent
by ALLAH [SWT] as a Prophet to preach among the people of
Midian. This story is narrated in various Surah's of the
QUR'AN as follows:
“AND UNTO MIDIAN WE SENT THEIR BROTHER
SHU'AYB. HE SAID [TO THEM]: O MY PEOPLE, WORSHIP ALLAH,
YOU HAVE NO GOD BESIDE HIM [ALLAH]. A CLEAR SIGN HAS
INDEED COME TO YOU FROM YOUR SUSTAINER. THEREFORE GIVE
FULL MEASURE AND JUST WEIGHT, AND DIMINISH NOT FOR PEOPLE
THEIR MATTERS [UNJUSTLY], AND\CREATE NOT DISORDER IN THE
EARTH, AFTER IT HAS BEEN REFORMED [BY PROPER ORDER]. THIS
WILL BE BETTER FOR YOU IF YOU ARE TRUE BELIEVERS.” (Surah
Al-A'a-raaf : 7/85)
“AND SIT NOT ON EVERY PATH, THREATENING AND
TURNING AWAY FROM THE PATH OF ALLAH THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN
HIM [ALLAH] AND SEEKING TO MAKE IT CROOKED. AND REMEMBER
WHEN YOU WERE FEW AND ALLAH MULTIPLIED YOU: AND BEHOLD,
WHAT WAS THE END OF THOSE WHO ACTED CORRUPTLY.”

“AND IF PART OF YOU BELIEVE IN THAT WITH
WHICH I AMM SENT, AND PART BELIEVE NOT, WAIT PATIENTLY
UNTIL ALLAH JUDGE BETWEEN US, FOR HE [ALLAH] IS THE BEST
JUDGE.” 97/87)
