THE PIOUS WOMEN
HADHRAT UMME QAIS BINT MIHSAN (RA) - She was the sister of Hadhrat
Ukkaashah Ibn Mihsan (RA) who was from amongst the companions of the Prophet (SAW) who participated in the battle of Badr. She embraced Islam in
the early days of Makkah and migrated to Madinah with her household. She has narrated from the Holy Prophet (SAW) - Hadhrat Ubaydah Ibn Abdullah
Ibn Utbah has narrated that Umme Qais sister of Ukkaashah Ibn Mihsan has said,
"I bought my son in the presence of the Holy Prophet (SAW) who did not eat food (i.e. he was still a suckling child). The
Holy Prophet (SAW) sat him in his lap and he urinated upon the Holy Prophet's (SAW) clothes. The Holy Prophet (SAW) asked for water and sprinkled
it upon his clothes, and did not (thoroughly) wash it."
Hadhrat Durrah Bint Mu'aadh (RA) narrates from Umme Qais (RA) that she once questioned the Holy Prophet(SAW), "When we shall die,
shall we go to see each other?" The Holy Prophet (SAW) replied, "Bodies will be in form of birds hanging onto Jannah until the day of
judgement, when every soul will enter its body."
Ubaidullah Ibn Abdullah also narrates that Umme Qais Bint Mihsan (RA) was from those first migrating women that took an oath of
allegiance upon the hands of Holy Prophet (SAW). She was the sister of Ukkaashah and she brought in the service of Holy Prophet (SAW) a son of
hers in whose neck she had tied a piece of thread due to him suffering pain. The Holy Prophet (SAW) said,
"Why do you remedy your children through this mean. Make compulsory upon
yourselves the use of aloeswood, because there are remedies in it; from amongst
them the remedy of pleurisy (a form of pneumonia) also."
HADHRAT UMME HAKAM BINT ABI SUFYAAN (RA) - She was the half-sister of Hadhrat Umme Habibah
the wife of the Holy Prophet (SAW). Hadhrat Mu'aawiyah (RA) was her real brother. Their mother was Hind bint Utbah. She was one of those
that accepted Islam on the day Makkah was conquered. She took the oath of allegiance from the Holy Prophet (SAW). She has narrated from her
brother and her son Abdur Rahman Ibn Abdullah Ibn Thaqafi has narrated from
her.
Imaam Zuhari (RA) narrates, 'I entered upon Hadhrat Urwah Ibn Zubair (R.A) as he was writing to Waleed Ibn Abdul Malik's companion
Hunaida has he had questioned him regarding the following verse of the Holy
Qur'an:
"O you who believe! When believing women come to you asemigrants, exaniine them." -
(AI-Mumtahanah:IO)
He wrote 'the Holy Prophet (SAW) had formed a peace treaty with the Quraysh on the day of Hudaybiyah, that he would return to them
who came without his guardian's permission; thus the men would be returned. But when the women migrated, Allah forbade that he return them
when they had been tested, with the test of lslam. Thus she said that she came with desire in accepting lslam. And Allah ordered him that
he return their dower towards them, and Allah has further said, 'and you ask for what you have spent i.e. on dowry.'
The next morning her two brothers came in her pursuit. The Holy Prophet (SAW) refused to return her to them. They returned to
Makkah and informed the Quraysh. But they did not send anybody in her pursuit. Instead they were content that the women were captured. "And ask
for (the return of) that which you have spent (as Mahr) and let them (the disbelievers, etc.) ask back for that which they have spent. That is
the Judgement of Allah. He judges between you. And Allah is All-Knowing, All- Wise." (AI-Mumtahanah:10)
It was ordained that if one of them has lost his wife to the kuffaar then if a woman comes from them, and you obtained some booty
then give them from it the dower for that woman that has come to you. Thus the believers remained steadfast upon Allah's judgement and the
mushrikeen refused to do so."Then pay to those whose wives have gone, the equivalent of what they had spent (on their Mahr)." - (Al- Mumtahanah:
1 1 )
But we do not know of any believing woman that left her husband to go to the disbelievers after accepting Islam. And this order
was revealed just in case it would happen. "Likewise hold not the disbelieving women as wives." (A I- Mumtahanah: 1 0)
Upon revelation of the above, Hadhrat Umar Ibn Khattaab (R.A) divorced Mulaykah Bint Abi Umayyah and Mu'aawiyah Ibn AbiSufyaan
married her. Hadhrat Umar (R.A) divorced Bint Jarwal whom Abu Jahm married, lyaadh Ibn Ganam divorced Umme Hakam bint Abi Sufyaan whom Abdullah
Ibn Uthmaan Thaqafi married and from him she bore Hadhrat Abdur Rahman (R.A).
HADHRAT MAAWIYAH (RA) - Hadhrat Maawiyah (RA) was the freed slave girl of Hujayr Ibn Abi
Ihaab. It is in her house that Hadhrat Khubayb Ibn Adi (RA) was confined to in Makkah until the sacred months would pass so he may be killed.
She after embracing Islam used to narrate his story as: By Allah, I saw no one better than Khubayb. I used to spy on him through
the door opening; he used to be in chains, I was unaware of any grape existence on earth (i.e. it was not the season. However, in his hands used
to be a bunch of grapes the size of a man's head, he used to be eating from it and that was Allah's provision.
Khubayb used to recite the Holy Qur'an in Tahajjud. The women folk used to listen and cry and have a soft heart for him . Hadhrat
Maawiyah (RA) says, "I said to him, O Khubayb ! Have you any need?" He replied, "No, but that you give me to drink sweet water and not feed me
what has been sacrificed on idols' names and that you inform me when they plan to kill me."
When the sacred months elapsed and they planned his death, I came and informed him. By Allah ! I didn't see him at all affected
or concerned, instead he said, "Send me a razor so I may shave." She further states: I sent him a razor with my son Abu Husayn (her adopted son).
When the child went, I thought, 'What is he going to do? - 'I have sent this child with a razor so he may kill him in revenge. When my son
brought to him the razor he said to him in a joke, "Iswear by your father! You are brave. Didn't your mother fear when she sent you with this
razorthat I might betray her when you are actually planning to kill me?"
Hadhrat Maawiyah (RA) says, "I was listening to this, thus I said, ' O Khubayb! I trusted you with Allah's trust and I gave you
with your Lord' s trust and not that you kill my son." Hadhrat Khubayb (RA) replied, "I do not intend to kill him. We, in our religion do not
permit betrayal." She says, "I informed him that they intended to kill him the foliowing morning."
She further states, "They unchained him and took him to 'Tan'eem'. Women, children, slaves and a congregation from the people of
Makkah accompanied him. Hadhrat Khubayb was then taken to his place of execution. He asked if he could be given an opportunity to offer two
rakaats salaah. They granted him the opportunity, thus he offered two short rakaats. (Thereafter he was killed.)
